Expanding the Capability of the 9140 – Piezoresistive Accelerometers

The Modal Shop’s Portable Vibration Calibration System Model 9140 supports ICP and charge accelerometers with built-in signal conditioning. But did you know that you are not limited to testing just these types of sensors? By adding an appropriate signal conditioner, a wide range of other sensor types can be tested.

Interested in testing piezoresistive accelerometers? Our latest calibration video demonstrates how you can bring the power of the metrology lab on-site to calibrate a piezoresistive accelerometer using Model 9140 with a portable signal conditioner. Would you like to learn about testing other types of sensors? Drop us a line, and we’ll be happy to consider your requests for our next video project!

Acoustic Methods of Microphone Calibration

Tracking microphone sensitivity over time is a good way to understand overall microphone stability and health. Verifying frequency response contributes to an increase the overall accuracy of measurements. So, how are various types of microphones validated or calibrated? Take a look at the paper Acoustic Methods of Microphone Calibration, presented at the International Congress on Sound and Vibration, to learn methods of calibration for condenser, array, probe, and surface microphones.

Trust but Verify

Remember the old saying, "Trust, but verify?" This is an important thing to keep in mind when it comes to dynamic calibration. It is a good policy to have layers of verification integral to both the calibration system and the operation process. A sensor that falls within tolerance may be suspect if its sensitivity is significantly different than previous calibrations indicate. Learn more about this important concept in the article “Vibration Calibration Best Practices” linked below.
