Each PCB® Modally Tuned®, ICP® instrumented impact hammer features a rugged, force sensor integrated into the hammer’s striking surface. The hammers are tuned to ensure the structural characteristics of the hammer do not affect measurement results. This is accomplished by eliminating hammer resonances in the frequency range of interest that corrupt test data, resulting in more accurate and consistent measurements.
Model | Force Range (±lbf pk) | Sensitivity (mV/lbf ±%15) | Typical Max Freq (Hz) | Effective Mass (lb) | Length (in) | Typical Uses |

087B50 | 5 000 | 1 | 500 | 12.1 | 16 | Heavy foundations, ships, buildings |
086P92‑ES | 500 | 10 | - | 17 | 16 | Repeatable impacts for industrial applications |
088A | 500 | 10 | 2 000 | 0.4 | 6.6 | Reaches areas normally inaccessible for an impulse hammer |
086C09 | 500 | 10 | 8 000 | - | - | Controlled, repeatable impulse force |
The general rule to follow is that the larger the structure to excite, the larger the impact hammer required. See table above for examples.

Calibration data is provided electronically (on CD or USB memory stick) or as printed copies, depending on quantity rented and end-user preference.
The Modal Shop has internal calibration intervals set for most test products at 1 year. ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2000 makes clear that it is the responsibility of the end-user organization (in this case, the renter) to determine the appropriate calibration interval under the requirements of its own quality system. Per this, calibration certificates of rented equipment have "calibrated on" dates, but blank "calibration due" dates. Rentals ship with a customer specific expected return date in mind - if equipment is expected out for 5 months, the last calibration date will be within the past 7 months. Calibration to additional standards (e.g. Z540 or specific FAA requirements) are possible, but there may be an additional charge.
When a new hammer is rented, it generally includes calibration from PCB with one tip type. Upon recalibration of any hammer at The Modal Shop per the intervals detailed in the paragraph above, the unit is calibrated with each hammer tip. If calibration values are required for each tip, please request at time of rental.
The Modal Shop's Scope of Accreditation can be found here. An example of a calibration certificate can be found here. Please contact us with questions or if a different calibration will be needed for your rental sensors.
